iTunes Review
The Los Angeles–based, female-fronted metalcore band In This Moment lost founding members Jeff Fabb and Blake Bunzel prior to recording its fourth studio album, Blood, but those who embrace musical change and growth might be pleased to hear added electronic flourishes throughout. The arrival of new members Tom Hane and Randy Weitzel on drums and guitar, respectively, has resulted in a much darker and disturbing version of In This Moment. “Rise with Me” sets an eerie tone with an unsettling ambience over which Maria Brink inflects through waves of reverb to sound like a post-goth Björk. It’s not until the following title track that we get déjà vu of where the band left off with 2010’s A Star-Crossed Wasteland—though this time around, the hard-hitting choruses, chugging guitars, and Brink’s bewitching screams are peppered with sporadic electro flourishes. (They're courtesy of Juno Award–winning producer Kevin Churko, who's worked with artists as diverse as Ozzy Osbourne and Shania Twain.) The standout song “Adrenalize” sounds influenced by Al Jourgensen, while the closing ballad, “11:11,” plays with haunting elegance.
